ABOUT: Weingut Von Winning has been a winemaking entity in the Phalz since the mid 19th century. Since then the estate has gone through the usual ups and downs then in 2008 Stephen Attman took over the winemaking duty and it’s been upwards ever since. Now they’re a top notch producer with some of the oldest parcels within select GG vineyards (grosses gewachs = top quality) in Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg. In German terms they’re an outlier, they reside in the Phalz which isn’t nearly as notable as Mosel or Rheingau (though should be), and, hold your breath, they put their wine in BARRELS! Not many do and and in Germany if you put your GG Riesling in oak barrels the neighbors are going to talk. Von Winning wines are being heaped with praise and we’re lucky to have gotten our hands on a few bottles.

TASTE: Terry Theise’s note about this wine: Kirchenstück (Forst) After being overtaken by Pechstein in 2016, this supernal vineyard reasserts itself, and creates a sub-lime dry Riesling that stands with the greatest I’ve ever encountered. Sublime, the only word that suffices. Seizes you gently but doesn’t let go. Visits every cell in your mouth and leaves you coated with flowers and stones. Great wines take you into the ground, but you don’t have subterranean eyes, and so you are blind and blissful and still and surrounded, and all the world below is present for you.

PAIR: Coconut curry, cold asparagus, bean and corn salad, roasted beets, tacos, roasted peanuts, and green salad with vinaigrette.
