ABOUT: Thermenregion, a wine growing area in lower Austria, achieved its name due to the hot springs flowing underneath the regions vineyards. It reaches from the southern outskirts of Vienna all the way south to Baden. Vineyards were established here 2000 years ago by the Romans and the oldest winery in Austria resides here, Freigut Thallern near Gumpoldskirchen, which was founded in 1141 by the Cistercians. Just a short drive south of Vienna and you’ll come across Weingut Johanneshof Reinisch, makers of exceptional, organic wines made from Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and indigenous grape varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler. This is the fourth generation to make wine at Johanneshof Reinisch, the current crew being three brothers handling the business and cashing the checks. Generally speaking the wines are bright, earthy, and balanced, and a terrific introduction to the wonder of St. Laurent. Wish there was more to be had in our market.

TASTE: It’s been decided that St. Laurent is a crossing of Pinot Noir and an unknown parent, and the comparisons to Pinot Noir are thick. If you really like Pinot Noir then this is a grape to investigate for sure. This Johanneshof Reinisch St. Laurent is outstanding, flavors and aromas of baking spices, cherries, raspberries, mushrooms, chocolate and leather. It’s lean in style with both bright, sweet red fruit and dark earthiness, umami is the best word for it. The acidity is a touch up from medium making it refreshing, even several years on. That uptick of acidity allows for good ageing and this St. Laurent will positively develop until 2030.

PAIR: Grilled fennel with brie, roasted cauliflower with peanut butter and prunes, black pepper tofu, and a grilled Swiss cheese sandwich.
