ABOUT: Thermenregion, a wine growing area in lower Austria, achieved its name due to the hot springs flowing underneath the regions vineyards. It reaches from the southern outskirts of Vienna all the way south to Baden. Vineyards were established here 2000 years ago by the Romans and the oldest winery in Austria resides here, Freigut Thallern near Gumpoldskirchen, which was founded in 1141 by the Cistercians. Just a short drive south of Vienna and you’ll come across Weingut Johanneshof Reinisch, makers of exceptional, organic wines made from Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and indigenous grape varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler. This is the fourth generation to make wine at Johanneshof Reinisch, the current crew being three brothers handling the business and cashing the checks. Generally speaking the wines are bright, earthy, and balanced, and a terrific introduction to the wonder of St. Laurent. Wish there was more to be had in our market.

TASTE: Pinot Noir gets the very best spots in the Reinisch vineyards, making refined and rounded wines with gentle tannins. Anne Krebiehl’s note is hard to beat, here it is: “Very tentative hints of earthy red fruit are all that can be discerned on the nose. The palate is lithe and soft and slightly edged with fine sprays of white pepper amidst very tender red fruit: is it cranberry? Red fruit just shimmers through and wants to be coaxed out. The delicate aftertaste of forest floor, cranberry and pepper is a joy. “

PAIR: Bean thread noodles with vegetables, tofu fried rice, soy glazed eggplant, Pesto Genovese, and vegetable jambalaya.
