Description

ABOUT: Vina Sastre was founded by Jesus Sastre and his late brother Pedro in La Horra, Northern Spain, and sits within the borders of legendary DO Ribera del Duero, home to greats Vega Sicilia and Pingus. Unlike most of his neighbors, Jesus tinkers with organics and biodynamics in his old vineyards of Tempranillo in the towns La Horra and Roa, and not a drop of chemical or copper has touched his soil in 30+ years of working it. We are big fans of their style of Tempranillo, structured, powerful, and balanced. The white wine made from Jaen is one of our absolute favorites as well. And as always the wines have such friendly prices we can't help but stock as much as we can. It's not about the latest vintage with Vina Sastre, look to the older vintages for extraordinary development.

TASTE:
Collaborating with Gerardo Mendez of Do Ferreiro on their first white wine, this Blanco is made from indigenous and super rare Jaen that were planted in between Tempranillo vines. The 2013 growing season in Spain was far from perfect, but Ribera del Deuro seemed to avoid the cool temperatures and downpours and made some exceptional wines. The 2013 Sastre Flavus, made from white grape Jaen, is only slightly less concentrated that the epic 2010 vintage, knocked down .5% abv so no big thing. It's a little leaner than 2010 but still has a bit of heft and aromas and flavors of peach and apricot with an intense streak of stone minerality and salinity powering through a long finish. The fruit flavors and aromas are present but it's the tertiary qualities that make this wine really vibrate. Long finish/high quality/low production/drink or hold.

PAIR: Apricot and chickpea tagine, green curry with spring vegetables, grilled cheese sandwich, rosemary roasted potatoes, and cold pasta salad.
