ABOUT: Spottswoode Estate is one of the jewels in the Napa Valley crown and the wines, in our opinion, are some of the finest in the valley. This 45 acre estate (37 planted to vines) has a long history dating back to the 1880’s when it was founded by George Schonewald who was first to put vines in the ground. In 1910 the Spott’s family picked it up, then in 1972 the Novak family acquired the property and are the current operators. Some stellar wine makers have spent time here, Tony Soter, Rosemary Cakebread, Pam Starr, Jennifer Williams, and the current winemaker, supremely talented Aron Weinkauf. Tony Soter started the move towards organic viticulture and Spottswoode was one of the first to be certified organic. They are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon which grows on alluvial fan within the city limits of St. Helena, not just in the appellation. Their Sauvignon Blanc is also making white waves and we consume as much as we can. If you’re visiting St. Helena you must make a stop at Spottswoode and take a tour and buy bottles.

TASTE: The grape harvest narrowly dodged the California wild fires that danced at the edge of many vineyards in 2017. The wines from Spottswoode from that year have shown up on our steps and we’re excited to have them to offer. This is what Lisa Perrotti-Brown had to say about the Spottswoode Lyndhurst 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon…”The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst is blended of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it offers soft spoken notes of dried lavender, wild blueberries, fresh black currants and kirsch plus hints of dried herbs, unsmoked cigars and spice cake. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support the muscular, beautifully restrained flavors, finishing on a lingering earthy note”. We agree with every word and would add that while this wine drinks just fine at this moment, it will also develop for 10-15 years. We only received a little so get it while you can.

PAIR: Taleggio, deviled eggs, roasted fingerling potatoes with bay leave, Pudina rice with onion and tofu, grilled asparagus, and smoked polenta.
