ABOUT: Spottswoode Estate is one of the jewels in the Napa Valley crown and the wines, in our opinion, are some of the finest in the valley. This 45 acre estate (37 planted to vines) has a long history dating back to the 1880’s when it was founded by George Schonewald who was first to put vines in the ground. In 1910 the Spott’s family picked it up, then in 1972 the Novak family acquired the property and are the current operators. Some stellar wine makers have spent time here, Tony Soter, Rosemary Cakebread, Pam Starr, Jennifer Williams, and the current winemaker, supremely talented Aron Weinkauf. Tony Soter started the move towards organic viticulture and Spottswoode was one of the first to be certified organic. They are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon which grows on alluvial fan within the city limits of St. Helena, not just in the appellation. They’re Sauvignon Blanc is also making white waves and we consume as much as we can. If you’re visiting St. Helena you must make a stop at Spottswoode and take a tour and buy bottles.

TASTE: The grape harvest narrowly dodged the California wild fires that danced at the edge of many vineyards in 2017. The wines from Spottswoode from that year have shown up on our steps and we’re excited to have them to offer. This is what Lisa Perrotti-Brown had to say about the Spottswoode Estate 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon…”Made of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color and prances out of the glass with vivacious blackberries, crushed black cherries, warm black currants and red currant jelly scents plus exotic hints of cassia, cardamom, fenugreek and star anise with a waft of underbrush. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic energy and beautiful poise, with bags of bright, crunchy black and red fruit plus a firm, fine-grained texture, finishing long and spicy”. We agree with every word and would add that while this wine drinks just fine at this moment, it will also develop for many years to come. We only received a little so get it while you can.

PAIR: Brown butter walnut pasta, vegetable tagine, chiles rellenos, braised root vegetables, and Dijon roasted Brussels sprouts.
