ABOUT: There are roughly 250 makers of Brunello di Montalcino with only a few practicing organic or biodynamic viticulture. Thankfully Giuseppe Sesti makes some of the best Brunello and is a biodynamic advocate. With his vineyard nestled into a picturesque hillside in Argiano with a 12th century castle and tower, this seems like a must visit. I haven’t been but from what I’ve read this is one of those vineyards where the wine and surrounding landscape are in a certain beautiful harmony with one another. If you’re a cynic like me you look at the most lavish vineyards in Napa and doubt the wines good. Not the case with Sesti. There is a full line of Sesti wines but for many it begins and ends with his Brunello.

TASTE: The Sesti Monteleccio Rosso Toscana is made from all the Sanviovese grapes that didn’t make it into the Brunello or the Rosso di Montalcino. Lucky for us because the quality of this wine is through the roof and so generously priced that we feel very lucky to have acquired some. Flavors and aromas of strawberries and cherries, baking spices and wet potting soil, orange peel, rose petal, dark chocolate and marzipan. Uncommon perfume. The tannins are refined and sandy, the finish is very long, and while it’s drinking great right now it will also develop for another ten years, happily.

PAIR: Mushroom-Fontina pasta, baked potatoes with sour cream, zucchini with Parmesan and onions, stuffed bell peppers, and polenta with sage.
