ABOUT: The Sebastien Riffault Sancerre Skeveldra would completely baffle a WSET blind taster. Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre, simple right? Crispness, citrus and stone and brine. Riffault’s wines have nothing in common with the common Sancerre. He leaves the grapes hanging on the vines so long that botrytis initiates, which is fine with Sebastien, to be clear. He puts the wine in wood barrels and lets them go through malolactic fermentation. His neighbors must think he’s a freak. His vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic methods are in play. His vineyards are all flowers and grasses and horses pulling plows. These wines are some of our favorites, the Skeveldra being the number one pick. They’re so good they’ll make you rethink Sancerre.

TASTE: Sebastien Riffault's Skeveldra is a stunning Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc. First, the color of this wine is amber, on its way to orange. Its look reminded me of an old Jura wine more than a genuine orange wine. Deliberate oxidation probably helped the color move in this direction. The nose is billowing with aromas of black pepper, orange peel, lemons, almonds, nutmeg, salt, sourdough, and campfire. Tangy lemon, orange, and almond flavors with medium+ acid and a medium body. I’ll add low tannins because there is a sense of tannins in this white wine. Both refreshing and tangy with tons of character. This is the kind of wine that might upset some folk or completely thrill folks like you.

PAIR: Lasagna, asparagus, lemon ricotta pancakes, sesame tofu, goat cheese mashed potatoes, and lemon parmesan roasted vegetables.
