ABOUT: This family-run estate in the Austrian village of Schützen has been turning heads for the last two decades with their impeccably created white, red, and pink wines. Situated on a sunny, limestone rich slope on the western side of the Lake Neusiedl is the Prieler Vineyard called Seeberg, home to their famous Pinot Blanc. Meticulous work in the vineyard (natural pest management, rigorous pruning, multiple tries) and in the winery (multiple sorting, pied de cuve) has won them accolades from many respected wine journalists. The youngest, Georg, has begun the conversion from organic viticulture to biodynamics and I suspect the quality of the future wines from Prieler will be off the chart.

TASTE: This is 100% Blaufrankisch from limestone soils and is a drop dead knock out hot as hell pink. A wine for the dark months, which we know first hand because we tasted it again in November 2020 in Seattle. Still totally fresh and bouncy with aromas and flavors of strawberries, raspberries, and oranges, brine, pepper, and a touch of almond. Two things keeping this wine in excellent shape and slowing its development is high acidity and the almighty screw cap. It’s almost time for quarantine Thanksgiving and we’re drinking this. You should too.

PAIR: Portobello mushroom mac&che, roasted cauliflower, spicy Szechuan green beans, Thanksgiving stuffing with nuts and dried fruits, and Chiles Rellenos.
