ABOUT: Working some extremely rugged terrain, Maxine Magnon is producing some high quality, terrior-driven wines from 11 hectares of vines in the rocky regions of Corbieres in southern France. He does all the heavy lifting, is certified organic and incorporates biodynamic practices to his parcels of land, all planted to and interesting gang of grape varieties. Carignan and Cinsault are the usual suspect and he has plenty of it, but he also has parcels of Grenache Gris, and Macabou. He studied with Jean Foillard in Beaujolais, one of the finest naturalist winemakers in France, and it reveals itself via his complex and delicious wines, notably his traditional field blended wines.

TASTE: The Roseta is a field blend of mostly Carignan with bits of Grenache, Syrah, Grenache Gris, Macabou, and Terret. Field blend means that all the vines are planted in the same vineyard and vinified together, an understandable risk, but a tremendous success. The results are elegant and complex, less heavy and more earthy and herbaceous. Classic aromas of Herbes de Provence, dried cherry and raspberry aromas, baking spices and black pepper. The palate concurs the herbaceous aromas, with mediums in the body, alcohol, acid, and tannin categories. The palate is strikingly fruity and delicious, lean and ethereal, long finish and exceptional complexity.

PAIR: Beans of all varieties, couscous, sweet potato fries, paprika, bell peppers, Epoisses, Muster, and Roquefort.
