ABOUT: Matetic is one of only a few biodynamic wineries in Chile and has a HUGE 16,000 hectare estate in the San Antonio Valley in the Casablanca region. Only a small corner of this 16k is used for farming grapes which go into their outstanding lineup of wines. The rest of the land is home to sheep, blueberries, and a beautiful looking hotel. Being 20km from the ocean leads to the most-desirable high-diurnal shift, cool nights and hot days. This helps retain acidity and freshness in their Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir. We are big fans of Matetic, especially the older vintages, which develop handsomely.
TASTE: The grapes going into Matetic EQ Syrah come from two different loamy-clay sections of the Valle de Rosario portion of their vineyard. Once fermented, the wine go into French oak for malolactic fermentation, then takes a 12 months rest in those barrels before bottling. The 2011 Syrah has developed aromas and flavors of blackberries, plums, lilac, violet, black pepper and damp potting soil. Full-ish body which has soft curves and equally delicate, finely integrated tannins. The acid and tannin structure firmly support this now 10 year old Syrah. More positive development to come!
PAIR: Grilled eggplant tacos, Cacio e Pepe, 3 bean veggie chili, roasted mushroom torta with refried beans, and smoked gouda, tomato, and basil crostini.
