ABOUT: Matetic is one of the few biodynamic wineries in Chile and has a HUGE 16,000 hectare estate in the San Antonio Valley in the Casablanca region. Only a small corner of the land is used for farming grapes which go into some outstanding wines. The rest of the land is home to sheep, blueberries and a beautiful looking hotel. Being 20km from ocean leads to the desirable high diurnal shift, cool nights and hot days which help retain acidity and a bunch of other good stuff. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir really likes this scenario and Matetic makes some great ones.

TASTE:I am so glad to have a Chilean wine on board! This Matetic EQ Sauvignon Blanc is our first and it’s an eye opener. First off, it is one of the very lightest in color of any wine I’ve ever laid eyes on. But when I stuck my nose in there and actually choked a little, the aromatics lept right up my nose from the glass. Caught me off guard. Pineapple, grapefruit, orange, lime, and lemon, peels included. Sea salt and a little bit of something hard to put my finger on. Almond? Marzipan? It’s just little enough to indicate this is not an all-steel, no air contact sort of wine. It spent some time in neutral oak barrels, and all the better for it. So it’s fruity like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but not as herbaceous, and high in acidity and saltiness like a Sancerre, but with way more fruit. I like where it lands, right in between. The acid is high so this wine will develop for another ten years. Excellent wine and a great value.

PAIR:Granados, Humitas, Tomatican, vinaigrette dressing, zucchini, peas, kale and pad thai.
