Description

ABOUT: Mas D’Alezon is located just inland from the Mediterranean coast of France in the schist-rich region Faugeres. This area is within the Languedoc-Roussillon region and was granted their own well-deserved AOC in 1982. Kind of a big deal in a vast region which struggles for a clear cut set of identifiable quality wine regions. In the late 1990's Catherine Roque, mastermind behind Mas D'Alezon, purchased seven hectares in the northern corner of Faugeres in the village of Soumatre, the highest elevation vineyards in the appellation. Schist soils, low fertility, high elevation, Rhone grape varieties like Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Syrah…the wines from Faugeres are always worth a look and we believe the Le Presbytere is one of the best.

TASTE: Before the ripe red and black berry fruit flavors are noticed, the drinker will notice a dash of SO2 remaining in the bottle. Surprising and wonderful, the spritz adds dimension and nicely complements the flavors of licorice, black pepper, rosemary and salt. Exotic is written in my notebook, a word rarely used but deserved. It’s 80% Grenache and the rest is a balance of Mourvedre and Syrah. This wine gets Grenache just ripe, avoiding the drift into over-ripe and overwrought; there's a sip of prune and preserves but there is lightness and lift as well. The tannins are fine and the finish is long, we are big fans of this exotic! wine.

PAIR: Balsamic grilled mushrooms, fried eggplant parmesan, roasted apples potatoes and onions, spicy grilled vegetable fajitas, Moroccan vegetable tagine, and blue cheese and fig ravioli.
