ABOUT: Mas D’Alezon is located just inland from the Mediterranean coast of France in the schist-rich region Faugères. This area is within the Languedoc Rousillon region and was blessed to have been granted their own AOC. Kind of a big deal in a vast region which struggles with clear cut, identifiable quality wine regions. Catherine Roque purchased her 7 hectares in the northern corner of Faugeres in the late 1990’s in the village Soumatre, which happen to be the vineyards at the highest elevation in the appellation. Schist soils, low fertility, high elevation, Rhone grape varieties like Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah…good wines, and Mas D’Alezon is one of the best.

TASTE: Dark, ripe red and black berry fruits rule the Mas D’Alezon roost, but licorice, rosemary, and a stone-saltyness and ripe, blackberry sweetness keep things exotic. It’s 80% Grenache and the rest is a balance of Mourvèdre and Syrah. This wine, like others from Faugères, are great at getting Grenache just perfectly ripe, not over ripe; there are dashes of prunes and preserves but there is lightness and lift as well. Tannins are fine, finish is long, must drink.

PAIR:Beans, wild mushroom pizza, eggplant fries, roasted potatoes, blue cheese, and chipotle Field Roast sandwiches.
