ABOUT: The Vajra family has been making wine in the Italian commune of Barolo since the 1880’s, farming the highest hills in the region. Aldo Vajra took the wheel in the early 1970’s and was the first in the region to achieve organic certification for his 40 hectares. Vajra is most famous for their Nebbiolo hailing from the vineyard Bricco delle Viole, but their other wines are equally exceptional. They brought back Freisa from near extinction, grow Rhine Riesling in Piedmont, and make an ethereal sparkling Moscato d’Asti which blows the doors off the competition. The next generation are now in the vineyards and the cellars ensuring the quality of wine stays high and the name Vajra continues to exemplify a successful, independent, family run business.

TASTE: If you haven’t tasted a sweet, sparkling wine in a minute you should change that. Vajra’s Moscato d’Asti is like getting backhanded when you’re not focusing; the fruit unloads and holds your attention. This sparkling Moscato Bianco has lifted aromas and flavors of peach, apricot, honey, pear, ginger, and lemon zest, with enough acidity to strike a balance and drive home a long finish. Like sparkling wine, when I open a sweet wine like this I always think I should incorporate more sweets into my regular drinking program. It doesn’t always have to be dry whites and reds. This sweet, sparkling Moscato d’Asti can be as versatile and enjoyable as any old salty Sancerre.

PAIR: Peach-ginger galette with hazelnuts, strawberry shortcake, French toast, chile picante con limon Corn Nuts, hard Grana Padano and aged Gouda.
