ABOUT: Near the city of Saumur in the Loire Valley rests Domaine Filliatreau, maker of exceptional organic Cabernet Franc (soon to be biodynamic certified for those keeping score). Their main joint is a trogloditic vineyard plot called La Grande Vignolle and just down the road from it in the village Breze is their 6.5 hectare plot of vines in the lieu-dit of Chateau Fouquet. The fruit from this plot is exceptional and comparing their La Grande Vignolle side by side with the Chateau Fouquet is a great lesson in the variations of terroir. The Loire Valley is a fantastic place to visit and after you say hi to Paul and Fredrik Filliatreau and fill your rental with tons of their wine you can visit all those old castles and what not, just get the wine first.

TASTE: The 2016 Chateau Fouquet has flavors and aromas of black cherry, raspberry, licorice, black pepper, coffee and thyme. The wine lands gently in the middle with medium acid and tannin and a long finish. This is our first time stocking the Fouquet and I think of it as the La Grande Vignolle’s gentle brother. The more sensitive of the two and perfectly at home on the dinner table on a Tuesday night.

PAIR: Fried egg plant, artichoke dip, ramen noodles with sweet and spicy sauce, sesame almond noodles, and thyme roasted walnuts.
