ABOUT: Making wine in the shadow of an active volcano on an island sounds like the beginning to a work of fiction, but Rosanna Romeo and her daughter Chiara Vigo, 3rd generation winemakers in Sicily, are making it happen. They have 14 hectares near the Alcantara river at 700 meters on Mt. Etna growing vine on volcanic soil and lava flows. The Vigo is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappucino, 2 indigenous Sicilian grapes with Nerello likely having a dna relationship with Sangiovese.

TASTE: The Allegracore is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappucino, 2 indigenous Sicilian grapes with Nerello likely having a dna relationship with Sangiovese. Fermented in stainless steel vats using native yeasts and no temperature control, the team is committed to natural winemaking, and the results are fascinating, delicious, and wholly unique. Red and black fruits mingle with citrus peel and rose petal, a medium body with a high amount of crisp acid and balanced dry tannins…sounding like Barolo, cuz it’s like Barolo. There are Arabian influences in the local cuisine (saffron, clove, pine nuts, etc.) and this wine makes utter sense, complimenting rich pastas as well a Arabic seasoned rice dishes.

PAIR: Chestnuts, fontina, gouda, blue cheese, risotto, shitake and porcini mushrooms, and Aubergine relish.
