Description

ABOUT: North of the Touraine region of the Loire Valley is the hilly, clay-laden and under-valued region of Jasnieres which specializes in Chenin Blanc. Domaine de Belliviere is a stand out performer here, making expressive, biodynamic Chenin Blanc from 65 different sites, totaling only 15 hectares. Sounds like lottsa driving. The vines are rooted in the classic Tuffeau soil topped with flinty clay which define the Loire Valley. The attitude at Belliveiere is to create wine that express the truth of the vintage, yields be damned. Speaking of, yields have been low the last few years in the Loire so all the more reason to buy any and all wines from Jasnieres and Belliviere.

TASTE:This is a unique white wine – Chenin from the Loire usually is. I love the stuff though the style is rarely the same twice, which isn’t a problem for the adventurous drinker. This one is thick and full in the mouth, dry but with a hint of sweetness, honeyed with tea-like flavors and aromas, black and chamomile. Apples, ginger, apricot and peaches all pile on as well. The acid is right where it should be, high, and the finish is long and contemplative. Great stuff.

PAIR:Mushroom rillette, broccoli, stir fried leeks, Crottin de Chavignol, Saint-Maure, and Pyramide de Valencay.
