ABOUT:The description of Rene Barbier’s Clos Mogador wine reads like an entry in a wine dictionary. I’ll embolden the key words in my nutshell of a rundown. Clos Mogador is considered an alpha wine from the re-imagined Spanish region Priorat which resides in Catalunya. Important to know, this wine is made on stony hillsides in the tiny region of Gratallops, inside of Priorat. Good so far? Alright, the next word to know is llicorella, which means slate, and Gratallops is stupid with slate. Apparently there is practically no topsoil there, just slabs of slate that the vines power through to drink from the water reserves deep in the earth. Rene’s Garnacha vines are 80 years old, the roots must be 80 feet deep. The wines from this region tend to be as complex as the environment they come from.

TASTE: The 2016 Clos Mogador is a blend of 49% Garnacha, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Syrah and 25% Carignan. The juice spends a few years at the winery, a few racks, some oak, no filtering or fining, minimal intervention from start to finish and utilizing biodynamic methods. Luis Gutierrez from the Wine Advocate had this to say: "Keeping the classical profile, the 2016 Clos Mogador has been fine tuned, reducing the French grapes, and it matured approximately 18 months in oak foudre and barriques. There is a lively sensation on the palate, vivacious and with very fine tannins. It has a meaty touch and feels really young , despite the long élevage. There is a strong mineral sensation on the palate, something that is a texture and mouthfeel rather than a flavor. This is an unusual, fresh vintage."

PAIR: Mcroquetas, mole chilaquiles, pizza, lentil mushroom stew over mashed potatoes, and roasted bell peppers.
