ABOUT: Chateau Terrasson, located in Cotes de Castillon just east of Saint-Emilion in Bordeaux, has changed hands a few times since its inception in the 1950’s. Recently the vineyards moved from Christophe and Marie-Jo Lavau into the biodynamic embrace of Gerald and Alix Standley. While under the Lavau’s care the vineyards were Terra Vitis and HVE sustainably certified, the Standley’s have gone further by introducing biodynamic methods to the vines at Terrasson. Merlot is the dominate grape variety, followed by smatterings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Their 8.5 hectares of vines grow on a clay-limestone plateau which is an extension of the Saint-Emilion plateau but at a higher altitude. Impeccably balanced red Bordeaux for a fraction of the price, PLUS a few years under its belt. The Cuvee Prevenche is a finely textured, well extracted Merlot-dominate red wine with a dry, herbaceous backdrop and drinking perfectly right now.
TASTE: This concentrated, dense red wine is made from 90% Merlot, rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Developing aromas of strawberries, cherries, plums, licorice, thyme, fennel, dry potting soil, black olives and smoke. The body and alcohol weigh in at a medium+, while the acidity and tannin are a balanced medium. Bone dry with licorice and black olive flavors up front, followed by raspberries, cherries, strawberries, dried thyme, and dark chocolate. The finish is long and the complexity high, with more room for further development. An elegant Bordeaux at a stellar price.
PAIR: Gorgonzola and walnut pasta, grilled mushroom and onion tartlet, roasted eggplant with tomato and thyme, roasted garlic naan, and a vegetable lentil loaf.
