ABOUT: Pic St. Loup is a commune within the larger Coteaux du Languedoc appellation, just north of Montpellier in southern France. This is one of those sweet spots where the winemakers are ambitious, the terrior is exceptional, and the value is outstanding. Rhone grape varieties rule here, and Chateau La Roque is one of the best. If you think as highly about the Kermit Lynch corral of wines as I do, you would be wise to follow the link below and read about La Roque. It is clearly one of his favorites.

Cyriaque Rozier: Two Timin' Terriorist

TASTE:This is an absolute stand out wine, mature, bold, confident, but not easy. There are a lot of angles that caught me by surprise, notably going from the sweet, ripe smelling, almost overripe strawberries, blueberries and raspberries to the bone dry palate. Like going from jam to black coffee. Wines like this are thrilling, challenging and not the easiest to understand. Going back for another smell and taste, the nose is loaded with fennel, curry powder and mint, which translate clearly in the mouth. Medium body and alcohol with elevated acid and medium, powdery tannins. The tannins are interesting, super fine and mouth filling. They have a unique character all they’re own. “Powdered tannin” is the best English I can come up with. The complexity is up there and the finish is long. A tremendous value.

PAIR: Mushroom stir fry, Chanterelle mushroom duxelles heaped on rosemary crackers, mushroom Masala, and grilled vegetable fajitas.
