ABOUT: One of the first to be certified organic, then to practice biodynamics in Portugal are husband and wife team António Lopes Ribeiro and Sara Dionísio, owners of Casa de Mouraz in the Dao region of north central Portugal. António is from the region and his family has a smattering of vineyards in the area, making a number of different wines. The usual suspects are involved, Touriga-Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and Alvarinho; interestingly the Vinho Verde is made from a blend but dominated by the rarely seen Loureiro grape, grown in the sub-region of Lima. The wine we currently have is the Branco, the white field blend which is our favorite.

TASTE: Bring on the white wine field blend of Portuguese white grapes! Bore your friends to death by listing the grapes involved: Encruzado, Malvasia-Fina, Bical, Cerceal-Branco, Rabo-de-Ovelha, Fernão-Pires, Uva-Cão, Síria and a bunch more. Nerds. The flavor and aromas are tangy and nutty with lemons, limes, pineapples and dried herbs all uniting to illustrate what a Portuguese field tastes like. Medium body, high acid and a long finish. This wine will develop graciously, we tasted the 2015 (it’s now 2020) and it was fresh and vibrating with some developed nuttiness. This will be fun to taste in 10 years.

PAIR: This will go very well with fresh, crisp leafy green vegetables. Also raw tomatoes, vinaigrettes, and dishes flavored with citrus.
