Description

ABOUT: Bodegas Luzon has been producing wine in the Jumilla DO in Spain since the nineteenth century. It’s Inception was in 1841 when Don Jose de Molina, commander of the Royal Armies, returned to his homeland of Jumilla and built a winery for his daughter, and has been linked to the feminine side of the family tree ever since. Follow this link for the whole story. The Jumilla DO is in the southeast of Spain and has a harsh, continental climate, that leads to good development of tight bunches of thick-skinned grapes. Monastrell is the main grape variety at Bodegas Luzon, with a smattering of other Spanish and international grape varieties. Monastrell from this region is so full of character that we always jump at the chance to stock and sell some. And this wine is made from organically farmed Monastrell none the less. It's not just delicious but an outstanding value.

TASTE: Some of the heavy hitters penned notes about this wine. Check it out.

James Suckling: "Bark, mushroom, dark-fruit and dried-flower aromas follow through to a medium body, easy tannins and a medium, fruity finish. Vegan. Drink now. 91 points."

Decanter: "Intense cherry red color with purple background. On the nose, very intensive aromas of red ripe fruit and floral hints. Very fruity and fresh on the palate, smooth, glyceric and tasty. Sweet and mature tannins, balanced acidity and good persistence. 90 points."

Me (Ben): “Youthful, intense aromas and flavors of tart cherries and cranberries, black pepper and oregano. Medium+ body with zippy acidity and dusty-dry tannins. A rugged, sinewy brew of ripe berries and black pepper which persists and paired wonderfully with the sourdough crust pizza we had for dinner”.

PAIR: Manchego stuffed mushrooms, red rice with corn, tomato sandwich with olive tapenade and hummus, and finally double Gloucester cheese melted on toast.
