ABOUT: Patricia Gil Luna honed her winemaking skills at Vega Sauco, her father’s beloved winery in Toro, northwest Spain. Since love for Tempranillo is in the dna it made sense for her to strike out on her own in 2000 and make her own wines from Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Verdejo. Her winery was completed in 2004 and has since become a Toro powerhouse, her wines being well represented in far flung locations like here, Seattle. She farms 10 hectares of 40+ year old organic vines which are up there, 725 meters, and rest between the Deuro and Guarena rivers. This leads to a pretty severe continental climate, and with low nutrient, permeable sandy soils, these old vines have to dig deep and work hard to produce some pretty great wine. They do, and we are happy to have some on offer.

TASTE: Pretty traditional winemaking at Bodegas Gil Luna, the organic Tempranillo gets a long fermentation then goes into French oak for 8 months before hittin’ the street. Wine Spectator wrote a pretty great note for this wine. "Blood orange, forest floor and tobacco notes give this big red a traditional character, while black cherry, licorice and toast flavors impart youth and vigor. The tannins are a bit grippy, but orange peel acidity lends balance. Best from 2022 through 2032. 2,000 cases made, 400 cases imported. 90 points." Agreed.

PAIR: Cuban black beans with olives, braised root vegetables and cabbage, garlic scape and mushroom hash, and vegetarian Paella with roasted peppers and chickpeas.
