ABOUT: The Bergstrom’s have 5 biodynamic estate vineyards totally 84 acres which stretch across 5 of the very best appellations in Oregon: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Willamette Valley, and Yamhill-Carlton. They also have two additional vineyard sites which they have formed long term agreements with to control the farming and quality of the fruit. These are properly managed sites, biodynamic practices are the norm, making them a beacon of sustainable viticulture in the Oregon wine scene. And they’ve only been at this since 1999, so their wines in the near future will certainly be spectacular. We don’t pay much attention to wine scores but it’s hard to ignore that year in and year out they are heaped with praise from critics. We think they’re pretty great too.

TASTE: Silice is the French word for silica, which is a reference to the 14 acre sandy-as-hell vineyard called Silice in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. The Bergstrom’s planted this once walnut orchard/cattle farm with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2001 and the beautiful wines raised from this vineyard improve with every passing year. We liked what Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate had to say about this 93 point 2017 Bergstrom Silice Pinot Noir – “Medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Silice Vineyard opens with fresh tangerine peel, baked cranberries, dried bark and rose petals scents with notions of licorice, cured meats, pepper and spiced blackberries. The palate is medium-bodied and über spicy, with lovely orange and potpourri nuances. It has a firm, lightly chalky frame and great freshness on the finish. This merits another year in bottle.”

PAIR: Garlic ginger noodles, beet salad with arugula and orange, spinach and Chaumes filo pie, bloomin’ onion, and roasted root vegetable ragu with Polenta.
