ABOUT: Between 1987-1991 Mike and Jackie Etzel purchased 88 acres of pig farm on Ribbon Ridge and converted 23 acres into a Pinot Noir vineyard, building the winery in 1991 and began bottling their own wines. In 2000 they also planted an additional 10 acres in the upper terrace of the property and they bring in additional fruit every year to round out their production. Old information on the internet will describe Beaux Freres as a biodynamic property, but the truth is they've gone biodynamic and pulled back a bit, utilizing some of the preparations but not going through with certification. This to me is the sign of folks getting it right, eschewing strict parameters to pull the best from their vines.

TASTE: This is one of the very best “vineyard designation” wines made by Beaux Freres. Planted in 2003 in the Eola-Amity AVA at 450 foot elevation, Zena Crown vineyard is a wellspring of good grapes. Other big names like Soter and Penner-Ash buy-in grapes from these south facing, volcanically stoned slopes to make wines as well. Blackberries, raspberries, dark chocolate, salt and smoke aromas lift off; the dense palate confirms it and adds a citric streak of acidity on high. Tannins are refined and medium in amount and the finish is long. Positive develop is in this wines future.

PAIR: Roasted potatoes, grilled cheese, puff pastry stuffed with mushroom and shallot duxelles, Shakshuka with feta, and Sabich.
