ABOUT: The success of the DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in Tuscany is largely due to the Falvo brothers, who acquired Avignonesi in 1974 and began reenergizing the property and region surrounding it. Avignonesi began as a dessert wine producer, creating what is considered one of the best examples of Vin Santo, and over time became known for their dry wines and has become one of the largest land owners in the area. Not only do they own a ton of vineyard land, they are also one of the largest biodynamic operations working today, thanks to their talented biodynamic consultant Adriano Zago. Avignonesi was also one of the first to introduce international grape varieties to the area like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, proving they could compete with neighboring Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. Since 2009 the property has been owned by Virginie Saverys with the same vineyard management team working the 250 hectares divided between the Le Capezzine, I Poggetti, La Selva and La Lombarda vineyards.

TASTE: 2012 in Montepulciano and Cortona was perfect, warm and dry, producing intensely colored, full bodied red wines that are built to age. The Grifi was an outstanding success. This beauty is a blend of 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese comes from old vines in Montepulciano and the and the Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Avignonesi’s very best vineyard in Cortona. There are deep, woody, spicy scents, blackberries and raspberries, warm, almost figgy flavors with savory herbs and bold, bracing tannins. The acid is up there as well and the finish is long. This is a structured, powerful red that is drinking right this second but will also develop for many years to come. Decant it for the full effect.

PAIR: Mushroom duxelle spread on sourdough, eggplant and porcini meatballs, Chinese broccoli with shiitake mushroom, and pasta with a mushroom Bolognese sauce.
