ABOUT: Arianna Occhipinto, niece of Giusto Occhpinti, who is responsible for the famous COS wines of Sicily, has quickly become a Sicilian icon herself, creating biodynamically produced wines from indigenous grape varieties all over the island of Sicily. She started with one measly hectare of her own and now has 10 hectares of Frapatto and Nero D'Avola, all farmed biodynamically on her estate in Vittoria, in the southwestern corner of Sicily.

TASTE:This wine is one of my favorite expressions of Nero d’Avola, a grape that makes red wine on the island of Sicily. It can take many shapes; years ago it was the best selling glass pour in a bar I worked at, $6, couldn’t beat it. With some mac&che and you’re happening. It was jammy, lottsa red fruit and high in alcohol with little else. There is a lot of that in the market, but no wines like Arianna Occhipinti’s Siccagno. This wine is elegant, maybe a bit leaner than most, with rosemary and violets side by side with the red fruit aromas and flavors of cranberry, cherry, raspberry and plum. Lightly tannic with a crisp citric-like acidity. The wine spends a few years in Slavonian oak but doesn’t beat you over the head with it. Arianna has really nailed the dimensions of Nero d’Avola along with a certain sophistication that other’s just don't have. Drinking for another 10 years at least.

PAIR:baked ziti, spaghetti puttanesca would be a dream, olives, eggplant parmesan, and stuffed peppers.
