Description

ABOUT: Domaine des Carabiniers is a certified biodynamic family winery near Avignon in the southern Rhone. Operated by Christian Leperchois and his children Fabien and Magali, they produce wines from the Lirac AOC, Tavel AOC, Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape. The word Carabiniers refers to a barn on the property that was turned into a winery in the 1920’s by Christian’s relatives, and still used today. During medieval times though this building was used to station horses overnight for the cavalry soldiers charged with protecting the Pope in Avignon. The Leperchois make much loved white wines but we haven’t had the opportunity to taste them yet; the Lirac is a (now much loved) red wine made from an earthy mash up of 50% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre and 25% Syrah. A delicious blend that is very satisfying for those who enjoy a more savage style of Rhone wine. That’s us.

TASTE: This Carabiniers Lirac 2019 has aromas and flavors of cranberries, raspberries, strawberries, some black pepper, fennel, mushroom, damp potting soil, and citrus peel. The body, alcohol, and acidity are all medium in weight with very fine, sandy tannins, barely medium. The finish is medium+ in length and the wine is complex with another 10-15 years of positive development. At the end of my note I underlined savory and friendly. I stick to that.

PAIR:
Red lentil dahl, Pad See Ew, Chinese broccoli, vegetable stir fry, grilled eggplant baba ganoush, Field Roast sausage Sopes, and Chilaquiles.
